MRC polling found that 45% of Biden voters weren’t aware of the story or the laptop controversy and that if they had been, more than enough in battleground states would have changed their votes to make Trump president again.
The results have been deeply troubling. The FBI had opened specific lines of communication with Twitter management so its censorship requests could be completed in short order. It needed no more justification to request Twitter to censor a story than that officials thought the offending tweet could benefit Republicans electorally.
Mind you, much of this was occurring before the 2020 election. President Trump’s Department of Justice was not tilting the axis of justice in his favor; they were working against him.
Mind you also that the former Twitter officials on hand admitted it was wrong to have censored the New York Post story and that the story did not violate any of Twitter’s editorial standards. This would seem to be a big story, but only one of the three networks mentioned it on their nightly news shows — and that mention was brief, perfunctory, and both-sidesism at its worst.
Other outlets led with comments by ranking member Jamie Raskin, D-Md., whose job it is to try to confuse people on these relatively simple facts. He said members had threatened witnesses with arrest for “clearly imaginary offenses” and that the hearing amounted to a “wild cyber goose chase that turned up absolutely nothing.”
Not to be outdone, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., called it a “whole hearing about a 24-hour hiccup in a right-wing political operation” and said we could be talking about any number of radical leftist priorities, but instead, “we’re talking about Hunter Biden’s half-fake laptop story.” She did not note which half was fake. Leftists similarly lost their cool over Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ excellent State of the Union rebuttal, in which she correctly said it’s not about left v. right anymore but rather about crazy v. normal. That and her captivating story of President Trump traveling in secret overnight to visit the troops one Christmas riveted a nation used to ignoring those speeches — usually deservedly so. “This speech … I’m trying not to levitate from my chair because there were so many … she leaned so hard into the culture wars that she just slid right into ignorance,” sputtered leftist gay activist Jonathan Capehart on taxpayer-funded PBS.
Ask yourself why it makes Jonathan Capehart so angry that Sarah Huckabee Sanders spoke about protecting children from filth. Then, ask yourself if a Republican would have given that speech in 2016 or before. Times are changing.
Musk also exposed the Election Integrity Partnership, yet another attempt by the Department of Homeland Security to censor anti-leftist voices.
The partnership, which includes the Stanford Internet Observatory, the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, and Graphika, a social media analytics company, worked with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency to censor millions of tweets and other communications from conservatives.
They had 120 agents working 20 hours a day in some cases to identify conservative tweets for censorship. They monitored 15 tech platforms for “misinformation” in real time and got their wait time between a “misinformation” tweet being reported and removed down to about an hour. And they made clear they removed these tweets because of “huge regulatory pressure” from government. Who did government pressure them to censor? Donald Trump, of course. But also Breitbart News, Fox News, Just the News, the New York Post, the Epoch Times, and influencers from James Wood to Charlie Kirk to Jack Posobiec and President Trump’s son, Don Jr. We instinctively knew this, but now we know for sure, thanks to Musk and the Twitter Files. It is indeed happening.
The lies and double talk are not about to stop anytime soon. Democrats know the story of the Hunter Biden laptop can’t get out. They know it’s real and would significantly damage the president and his son. The media will not suddenly grow a conscience. They’re still trying to cram the word “insurrection” into every possible sentence, irony and facts be damned.
But as long as Elon Musk remains in control of Twitter and Republicans control a House of Congress and the subpoena power that goes with it, a ton of inconvenient and possibly legally treacherous facts will continue to come out. Americans will at least know what their government is doing to them. Whether they’ll see the need to fix it remains to be seen.
Either way, the job of exposing the lies and bias gets bigger and more challenging by the day. So please use the enclosed envelope to contribute to MRC, as we take this on every day.
